Curry to New York? Could Knicks Sign Shooter in Free Agency?

The New York Knicks were one of the worst three-point shooting teams in 2023. Could adding a Curry help?
In this story:

Despite being one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the NBA in 2023, the New York Knicks made a run and won their first playoff series since 2013.

Improving the team's shooting should be a priority this offseason, but who can they target? Dan Favale of Bleacher Report broke down the top free agent target for each team and tabbed shooting guard Seth Curry as the guy for the Knicks.

"Ideally, New York needs to secure shooting that cracks its most used closing lineups," Favale writes. "Limited size, defense and on-ball creation ensures that won't be Curry. But the Knicks will have a near-impossible time adding a reliable closer with part or all of the bigger MLE. Save the larger aspirations for the trade machine. Curry is both gettable and serves a purpose."

"Gettable" is one thing. But the question, however, becomes whether this would be too much of a "settle.' The need, however, exists. ... so much so that Knicks fans probably wish it was the Golden Warriors' Steph Curry, Seth's brother, who was up for a New York transfer

New York ranked 25th in three-pointers made as the club shot at a 34.7-percent rate. Among the Knicks' players who averaged at least five 3-point attempts a game, Jalen Brunson shot a team-best 39.8 percent. Julius Randle led the Knicks in three-point attempts with 8.1 a game.

Curry averaged 9.2 points per game and shot 40.5 percent from three in 61 games for the Brooklyn Nets last season. He also averaged 20 minutes per game and 3.4 attempts from three.

While there may be no questioning his shooting acumen, his dip in offensive production could be a cause for concern: Curry had averaged nearly 15 points per game in the previous two seasons before it dipped in 2023.

New York obviously needs to get better shooters around Brunson and Randle if they hope to make a deeper playoff run. With Curry set to turn 33 before next season and his dip in production, the Knicks should take a close look at the idea of adding a shooter ... though again, someone on a higher shelf than Seth would be preferable.
