New York Knicks Joel Embiid Trade Offer 'Not Taken Seriously' by Philadelphia 76ers
With all of the question marks that are surrounding the Philadelphia 76ers right now, there has been growing speculation that Joel Embiid might request a trade. The New York Knicks have made no secret about wanting to capitalize on that.
New York reportedly put together a package that they would be willing to give up for the reigning MVP if he were to request a trade. Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, Evan Fournier, and Mitchell Robinson were said to be part of the group that the Knicks were willing to part with, which would've accompanied part of the expansive draft pick cabinet they've stocked over the past few summers.
But according to Ian Begley of SNY, the 76ers never really gave this proposed trade package a second look and did not 'take it seriously' at any point.
"Per people familiar with the matter, nothing has changed," Begley wrote. "Those people reiterated that the organization believes Embiid is committed to competing for a title with the Sixers and finishing his career in Philadelphia."
This does not mean that Embiid is destined to stay in Philadelphia beyond this season. Questions still surround the team, including the status of James Harden, who sat out of the 76ers' Thursday opener against Milwaukee.
Whether the 76ers take the Knicks' trade offer seriously or not, both teams stand to benefit, as real assets would be given up from both sides. Embiid would change how the team operates and how the team runs its offense. It would be a lot to get used to and adjust to for the players that remain on the Knicks, so any trade between the two sides would probably be delayed until the coming offseason.
New York (0-1) returns to action on Friday night against the Atlanta Hawks (7:30 p.m. ET, MSG).
