Seafoam Series: Liberty All-Star Sabrina Ionescu Throws 1st Pitch for Yankees-Mets (Video)

Fresh off a triple-double, New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu threw out the first pitch for the 2023 Subway Series finale at Yankee Stadium.

Sabrina Ionescu swapped seafoam for pinstripes on Wednesday night.

The New York Liberty All-Star threw out the ceremonial first pitch to tip off the final game of the 2023 Subway Series at Yankee Stadium. Donning a New York Yankees jersey bearing her No. 20, Ionescu made her toss from the pitcher's mound prior to the Bronx Bombers' last showdown of the season against Queens' New York Mets. Though she probably wouldn't have earned a called strike, Ionescu's throw reached home plate, much to the fourth-year pro's delight.

The Liberty and Yankees are broadcast siblings on YES Network, the regional sports network primarily owned by Yankee Global Enterprises.

It's one more successful throw for Ionescu, who was less than 24 hours removed from making history on Tuesday night: in helping the Liberty erase an 18-point deficit in a comeback win over the Seattle Storm, Ionescu posted a serendipitous statline with 12 points, assists, and rebounds each, good for her fourth career triple-double, the second-most in WNBA history.

The Oregon alumna drew cheers from both Yankees and Mets fans upon her appearance, even when wearing the former's traditional home jersey in The Bronx. Ionescu is perhaps no stranger to playing peacemaker for warring New York sports fans: she has routinely celebrated triples with tributes to stars of both the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, namely Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges respectively.

Ionescu is far from the first seafoam star to take her talents to the majors: teammate Betnijah Laney previously threw the first ball at a Mets game last spring, a pitch caught by then-New Yorker Natasha Howard.

Taking in Wednesday's game between the Yankees and Mets, the latter going for 3-1 season series victory, will provide some down time for Ionescu in the midst of one of the Liberty's busiest weeks of the season: winners of three in a row, New York (17-5) is about to hid the middle portion of a 12-day stretch that has them taking the floor seven times. The penultimate game of a four-game homestand, and the first half of a back-to-back, lands on Thursday night against the Atlanta Dream (7 p.m. ET, YES).
