Liberty's Breanna Stewart Named WNBA All-Star, Captain

Breanna Stewart is the first New York Liberty representative on her way to Las Vegas for the 2023 WNBA All-Star, where she'll pick teams alongside local A'ja Wilson.

Hey now. she's an All-Star ... and then some.

The WNBA unveiled the starting ten for its upcoming 2023 All-Star Game in Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon. As one of the top two earners of fan votes, Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty will captain a squad, going up against a group led by local Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson for the second consecutive season.

One of the high-profile additions of an eventful Liberty offseason, Stewart hardly needs to justify her case for further All-Star inclusion, as she's set to make her fifth appearance in the exhibition. Though New York is populated by downright historic talents (i.e. Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones, Courtney Vandersloot), the modern team has ebbed and flowed based on Stewart's performances thus far.

Entering Sunday action, Stewart was the WNBA's leading rebounder (10.8 per game) and second-highest scorer (22.9, behind only Jewell Loyd of Seattle). In her first appearance at Barclays Center back on May 21, Stewart set a franchise record with 45 points in a single game, one of several marks on both a local and a national level that she has set this season.

Stewart will go into All-Star Weekend looking for a bit of revenge: this will mark the second straight season where teams respectively chosen and captained by Stewart and Wilson will face off in the exhibition. In last year's game in Chicago, Team Wilson took home a 134-112 victory over the group led by Stewart, then a member of the Seattle Storm. Team Wilson was partly assisted by 19 points from Ionescu in her first All-Star entry, as well as eight assists from Vandersloot (repping the hosting Chicago Sky at the time).

Among those joining Stewart and Wilson in the starting group are Loyd and two more Aces in Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young. The list is rounded out by Dallas Wings pair Arike Ogunbowale and Satou Sabally, as well as Brittney Griner (Phoenix), Nneka Ogwumike (Los Angeles), and rookie Aliyah Boston (Indiana).

Voting for All-Star reserves will now begin among the WNBA's dozen head coaches, with that group set to be revealed on July 1. One week later, players will be chosen by Stewart and Wilson in a televised special, shortly before Stewart and the Liberty battle the Storm at Barclays Center. The 2023 WNBA All-Star Game will then be held at Michelob Ultra Arena, home of the defending champion Aces.
