Lakers News: 5 Kobe Bryant Statue Ideas That Should Be Considered At The Crypt
18-time Los Angeles Lakers All-Star shooting guard Kobe Bryant may no longer be with us in his corporeal form, but rumor has it that he is going to be eternalized in bronze before too long.
Bryant spent all 20 of his NBA seasons with Los Angeles, from 1996-2016, and won five titles for the Lake Show, across seven NBA Finals appearances.
The 6'6" swingman out of Lower Merion High School holds regular season career averages of 25.0 points on .447/.329/.826 shooting splits, 5.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per contest. He was a 12-time All-Defensive Team honoree, a 15-time All-NBA Teamer, and was twice named the NBA Finals MVP in 2009 and 2010.
Now, his widow Vanessa Bryant released an Instagram story with a Photoshopped statue in front of LA's home court, Crypto.com Arena, and one fan believes it could indicate that Kobe will be getting his own statue in front of the complex soon:
Former Lakers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, Elgin Baylor and Jerry West have all been remembered in bronze and adorn the outside of the arena at present.
So what could Kobe's statue look like, whenever it does arrive? Here are some hypotheticals:
1. The Lob To Shaq
A joint statue of Bryant's lob to O'Neal during LA's 15-point fourth quarter comeback in the seventh game of the 2000 Western Conference Finals against the Portland Trail Blazers would be a bit out-of-the-box -- although certainly it could be combined with Shaq's extant statue, where he's dunking already at the rim.
2. Fro-Era Kobe
Kobe was a mind-bending mega-athlete in his early playing days, and rocked a slick afro to boot. It was even commemorated in a Cal Scruby tribute song:
3. Dunk Contest Kobe
As a rookie, a then-18-year-old Bryant won the 1997 NBA Slam Dunk Contest during the '97 All-Star weekend festivities at Cleveland's then-Gund Arena, in large part thanks to hyper-athletic performances like this:
4. The Two-Handed Flush
Bryant laid down this nifty two-handed slam against one of his chief swingman rivals of their generation, Tracy McGrady, then in his prime with the Orlando Magic:
5. The Reverse Dunk
This was one of the nastiest moves in the Hall of Famer's arsenal:
There's a litany of career highlights from which one can select. We could make these lists all day.
For now, this is what we've got cooking.
