Lakers News: Austin Reaves Will Play For Team USA In Upcoming FIBA World Cup
Los Angeles Lakers starting shooting guard Austin Reaves has a summer job.
Per Joe Vardon and Shams Charania of The Athletic, the 6'5" swingman out of the University of Oklahoma has committed to suit up for Team USA during this year's FIBA World Cup in the Philippines.
Vardon and Charania add that Reaves will join two other young talents on the team, All-Star Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Edwards and Milwaukee Bucks power forward/center Bobby Portis.
That triumvirate represents the first reported portion of what will ultimately be a 12-man roster being put together by USA Basketball managing director Grant Hill (a Hall of Fame combo forward), head coach Steve Kerr (also LA's recently vanquished foe behind the Golden State Warriors), and team GM Sean Ford, who has been with USA Basketball since 1999.
Training camp for Team USA kicks off on August 3rd in Las Vegas, just a car ride away for Reaves. The team will play exhibition contests for a few weeks, starting on August 7th. World Cup play proper commences on August 26th against the New Zealand national team.
Vardon and Charania note that the 25-year-old Reaves, as a solid playmaking guard with some size, defensive ability, and outside shooting touch, represents the ideal fit for Team USA's vision for its wing players.
Reaves averaged 16.9 points on .464/.443/.895 shooting splits, 4.6 assists, and 4.4 rebounds across 16 playoff games for LA, all starts. He will be a restricted free agent this summer, though the Lakers are expected to match any offer tendered his way.
