Lakers News: Bill Simmons Wonders If 2023-24 Could Be LeBron James' Last Year In LA

Could the 19-time All-Star look to move on in 2024?
In this story:

Los Angeles Lakers All-NBA small forward LeBron James may have threatened to retire after LA was swept out of the Western Conference Finals in May, and though him walking away from the league right now, with up to $99 million in salary money owed to him in 2023-25, seems less than likely, The Ringer's Bill Simmons wonders if James may be done with Los Angeles, barring a title run at least, following this next season.

The 38-year-old vet, a 19-time All-Star, four-time champ and four-time league MVP, is owed $47.6 million next season. He has a $51.4 million player option for 2024-25.

During a recent conversation with The Ringer's Ryen Russillo on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Simmons laid out why 2023-24 could indeed be James' final season... with LA, at least.

"LeBron, this is the last [guaranteed] year of his deal, and if his son is good enough to come right out of college and get drafted the first year, I think LeBron's just going to go to whatever team that is," Simmons said.

James' eldest son, 18-year-old LeBron "Bronny" James Jr., is a matriculating freshman at the University of Southern California, and the 6'3" shooting guard is already projected to potentially be a mid-first round draft pick among his peers.
