This offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers prioritized continuity with their roster construction rather than going star-hunting as they have done in the past. The team saw major success last season when they had good depth surrounding stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, so they wanted to continue building on that.

But this doesn’t mean that LA won’t get involved in the bidding if the right star becomes available. After all, the Lakers are a destination spot, and they always go for the star players.

One star that has been on their radar recently is Portland Trail Blazers star point guard Damian Lillard, who asked for a trade this summer. He and the Miami Heat have been linked together all offseason, but now it’s being reported that Lillard would be a professional and show up if dealt elsewhere.

Aaron Fentress of Oregon Live has the inside scoop on Lillard.

“If the Blazers and a team other than Miami hammered out a deal that Portland deemed more desirable than what they could acquire through dealing with the Heat, sources say Lillard would show up to his new team, do his job and play to the best of his abilities.”

With this new development, we could see other teams possibly get into the mix. This includes the Lakers, but the question is should they?

Lillard is a hell of a talent, but LA has gone down the three-star route before, and it hurt them. While Lillard is a much better fit than Russell Westbrook, it still seems like a risk to take.

LA may be better off staying the course with the team that they have put together. Obviously, if they start to struggle out of the gates and Lillard hasn’t been traded yet, that could change things.

But for right now, depth should continue to be prioritized. They won a title in 2020 behind strong depth and went to the Western Conference Finals last season with it. It seems like a pattern has formed in this era of Lakers basketball, and they would be smart to continue that.
