Memphis Grizzlies small forward Dillon Brooks offered up some pretty darn bonkers quotes following his early third quarter ejection from an eventual Game 3 loss to your Los Angeles Lakers.

Per Tim MacMahon of ESPN, Brooks believes that the public perception of his antics had an undue impact in referees opting to eject him after he shamelessly hit Lakers All-Star forward LeBron James in the family jewels.

“The media making me a villain, the fans making me a villain, that just creates another persona on me,” Brooks declared.

To be fair, when Joel Embiid kicked Nic Claxton in the nether regions during the third game of the Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets' now-concluded first round playoff series in the Eastern Conference, the probable 2023 MVP was somehow not ejected. His comrade James Harden later was for a different shameless foul.

If anything Embiid probably received some special treatment by benefit of being who he is.

Most non-superstar players at least should be instantly ejected for that level of unsportsmanlike conduct. Golden State Warriors power forward Draymond Green was booted from a playoff bout against the Sacramento Kings after stepping violently onto the chest of Kings center Domantas Sabonis. That, too, was the right choice, though the NBA later opted to additionally suspend Green for his actions, which felt a bit like overreach. The Warriors won without him, and then last night won with him, to even their ongoing series 2-2. The winner of their matchup will face the victor of LA's series with Memphis.

But back to Brooks. His claim that somehow he was ejected because of his reputation and not for his actions is patently ridiculous. His behavior deserved to be penalized. Unlike Green, the league has revealed that he will not miss tonight's action with a suspension. That, too, is the right call. Let's see how he responds on the hardwood in LA.
