All Lakers Expert Predictions For LA-Memphis Game 1
Your Los Angeles Lakers hope to snag a road win today in their first playoff game against the Memphis Grizzlies, set to tip off today at noon PT on ABC.
1. Who will be the game’s high scorer (among both teams)?
Alex: Look for Memphis All-Star point guard Ja Morant to feast against the Lakers' backcourt and notch 35+ points tonight in a Grizzlies win.
Noah: I’m going to go with LeBron James. Anthony Davis is the safer answer but I see the double teams coming his way. Playoff 'Bron is going to be activated and that starts with a 30-point performance tonight.
2. Will we get a Good Jarred Vanderbilt Game or an Invisible Jarred Vanderbilt Game?
Noah: It’s going to be good. He’s going to have a huge defensive performance to help the Lakers slow down Ja and co.
Alex: He was a tough watch against the Minnesota Timberwolves in LA's play-in win on Tuesday, and was replaced down the stretch several times by his backup, Rui Hachimura. LA desperately needs his length and defensive versatility, but it'd be ideal if he could score a bit, too.
3. Should LA let Ja Morant get his points and stay home on his teammates or throw double-coverages on him inside?
Alex: Should the Lakers trap him at the point of attack, they run the risk of freeing up other Memphis players to slash and cut inside. I think they should let him cook and try to keep most of the Grizzlies away from the post.
Noah: I think they shouldn’t double him but they should be ready to help. Allow Jarred Vanderbilt to work like a rover and be running all around the court to slow anyone and everyone down.
4. Will LA cover the spread (it's a four-point underdog) and/or win?
Noah: I think the Grizzlies take game one and cover. It’s going to be a raucous crowd and I think they’ll take game one, as LeBron and co. feel things out. However, I have the Lakers stealing game two. But more on that game later.
Alex: I think Memphis will cover the spread and outrun the Lakers tonight for a win, especially if Darvin Ham plays his stars big minutes. James and Davis will tire down the stretch if so, much like they did during the Timberwolves game.
