Lakers News: Future Hall Of Fame LA Champ Hoping For Reunion

Could he make sense for LA?
In this story:

Often times we see players leave the NBA for a season or two, only for them to return. Former Lakers center Dwight Howard hopes that he is the next in line for this. He has been playing oversees in Taiwan but believes that he can still contribute to a team in the NBA at a high level.

Howard recently had an interview with Zion Olojede of Complex.com and have his thoughts into this potential.

“I know that there’s at least 15 to 20 teams that I could play for,” Howard said. “And I know there’s teams that got great starting centers, but I know I could be a great backup center. I know I can provide a team with 25 minutes of dominant basketball. And that’s not even scoring, that’s just playing defense, locking people up, protecting the paint, rebounding, and finishing around the basket. I’ve had my fun in the game. I just want to go out like a champ like I’m supposed to.”

The last time we saw Howard in the NBA was with the Lakers during the 2021-2022 season. He averaged 6.2 points and 5.9 rebounds that year and he looked slow for most of it. It's a big reason as to why he didn't get signed last season and why teams may be hesitant to give him another chance.

The former All-Star center listed a few teams that he believes he could fit in well with and included the Lakers in that.

“Okay, you got Miami Heat. You got obviously, the Lakers. The Warriors,” Howard said. “The Kings. But the Kings, I would say the Kings got a couple centers so they probably wouldn’t. But the Kings. The Hawks. I’m from Atlanta, go back home with the Hawks.”

LA does need some help along their front court but realistically how much would Howard help them? They were the last team to have him on their roster and if they believed that he could provide some positive production, he would likely already be signed.

The Lakers should avoid Howard for now unless things get drastically worse. They can find other options to fill their front court hole that don't involve them bringing back the former champion.
