Lakers News: Hall Of Fame LA Big Man's Finals-Worn Merch Fetches Huge Auction Haul
Someone was a big spender on the Big Dipper.
That's the only conclusion we can draw after discovering that a 1972 NBA Finals game-worn jersey from Hall of Fame center Wilt Chamberlain -- who spent his five final, eventful NBA seasons with the Lakers -- just sold at Sotheby's for $4.9 million, per Dan Hajducky of ESPN.
A jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals, inked by you-know-who, sold for $10.1 million at Sotheby's. A game-worn jersey from Lakers Hall of Fame shooting guard Kobe Bryant during his 2007-08 season earned $5.8 million.
This tally has eclipsed the previous high watermark that the 7'1" All-Star big man posted: "just" $1.792 million. The 1972 Finals were a special time for Los Angeles, as the team broke through and won its first title of the Jerry West era against the New York Knicks. Chamberlain's rookie season Philadelphia Warriors outfit had held the aforementioned prior record for his paraphernalia.
In Chamberlain's five-year run with Los Angeles from 1968-1973, he posted averages of 17.7 points, 19.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists -- and those numbers were on the modest side of his epic stat sheet!
