Lakers News: How LeBron James Advised Ex-LA Starter About Playing For Hometown Team
At the trade deadline, your Los Angeles Lakers shipped out Patrick Beverley to the Orlando Magic, but he ultimately agreed to a contract buyout and signed with the Chicago Bulls shortly after.
As a Chicago native, the point guard is back home and ready to contribute to the team. Before making his decision to come to the Windy City, Beverley revealed that he talked to LeBron James to get his thoughts on playing for a hometown team.
During Friday’s postgame interview following the Bulls’ 131-87 victory over the Brooklyn Nets, Beverley shared some of the advice the Lakers star gave to him regarding his move:
“I talked to LeBron, who’s my big brother, and I asked him a lot of questions — ‘How was it playing at home?’ — the biggest thing he told me was to prioritize the job, which is playing basketball, and have everything else come after that. And I’ve just tried to do that since I’ve been back.”
James spent 11 seasons playing for his home city with the Cleveland Cavaliers, across two separate stints. The NBA's all-time leading scorer helped the Cavs win a championship in 2016 and Beverley hopes he can provide the same winning results for his new team in Chicago.
Although the Bulls have struggled this season without former Lakers lottery pick Lonzo Ball, Beverley aims to be the spark that helps push this team to the playoffs. So far, the 34-year-old seems to be on the right track as the team is 3-1 since his homecoming.
