Lakers: Insider Thinks Pau Gasol, Kevin Garnett Pioneered Next Phase Of NBA Big Men
The NBA has long been dominated by big men, from Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell to Shaquille O'Neal and Tim Duncan to Pau Gasol and Kevin Garnett. The role of the big man continues to evolve as the game changes.
Former Boston Celtics center and current ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins shared his thoughts on whether or not there's a modern day equivalent to two-time Los Angeles Lakers champ Pau Gasol, who went 1-1 in the NBA Finals against Perkins's Celtics, in the modern NBA.
“I think every player is different. Now, Pau Gasol, KG…Were they ahead of their time? Yes. As far as their ability to put the ball on the floor, in and out cross, their passing ability, their vision. Both sides of the floor. I don't really see no guy that actually mimics Pau Gasol.”
Pau Gasol certainly cemented himself as one of the most dominant seven-footers to enter the league. The Lakers legend was unique in the fact that he blended his size and skill to apply pressure on any opponent.
Once he teamed up with Kobe Bryant, Gasol’s force was undeniable. His ability to score in the post, knock down mid-range jumpers, and facilitate from the high post surely helped the Lakers win back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010.
Gasol's impact on the game also foreshadowed advancements in the game. As a big man, he was able to step out, stretch the floor, and hit three-pointers as well.
Kevin Garnett, former Celtics teammate to Perkins, also proved himself to be a well-rounded big man. He paired up nicely with Paul Pierce and Ray Allen because of his ability to guard multiple positions, switch onto guards, and protect the rim.
Even as a big man, Garnett was able to initiate the offense and make plays for his teammates. The 15-time NBA All-Star helped evolve the role of the power forward.
There is no doubt that Gasol and Garnett were pioneers in a new era of big men— players who could do more than just score in the post and protect the rim. They helped change the way that teams build their rosters. As the NBA continues to progress, we can expect to see more big men who follow in their footsteps.
