Never shy to acquire star talent, your Los Angeles Lakers have seemingly taken a different approach to building their roster after their latest pursuit with Russell Westbrook didn't pan out.

Since the 2023 trade deadline, the Lakers have committed to building key depth around their star talents of LeBron James and Anthony Davis for the near future, a far cry from their mentality just a few seasons ago.

The Lakers have pursued other star guards, including

Damian Lillard

,

Kyle Lowry

and

Kyrie Irving

. Even into this summer, there were some in the organization, including James,

who still had an interest in pursuing Irving

, though the front office

ultimately prioritized continuity

.

Trae Young

has long been on Los Angeles’ radar, depending on how his situation unfolds in Atlanta. Yet as Reaves continues to make these significant leaps, it increasingly looks as if the Lakers had that player right under their noses these past two seasons.

Focusing on Lowry, the Raptors legend was determining which team he would play for following the 2020 playoff exit from the bubble in the second round of those playoffs to heated Lakers rival Boston.

A defensive pitbull and a decent shooter on the outside, Lowry's addition to a core of James and Davis would've likely been a better addition than Russell Westbrook's ball dominant style with deficiencies on the defensive side of the ball.

With Russ, the Lakers failed to make the postseason in 2022 and appeared close to doing so again last season before shipping Westbrook out for D'Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Jared Vanderbilt at the deadline.

Lowry's play has certainly slipped in recent years due to his age, but he was still a valuable piece to the Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat in this year's playoffs.

Even with that in mind, we don't think Rob Pelinka is losing much sleep over losing him given the guard rotation LA has now.
