Lakers News: D'Angelo Russell Reveals Goals For LA
Your Los Angeles Lakers have had an interesting past couple of seasons when it comes to their point guard position specifically. D'Angelo Russell, who was just re-acquired at this year's trade deadline, was brought in back in 2015 to play that role. Chemistry issues led to hometown prospect Lonzo Ball replacing him but he was packaged up to bring Anthony Davis to town. Since then, a mix of Alex Caruso, Dennis Schroder, and Russell Westbrook have all tried to take on those responsibilities.
However, it just never felt like any of those guys fit. A point guard is meant to be the coach on the floor and that probably is hard to achieve while playing alongside LeBron James, but it is clear that he needs someone to take the ball-handling duties off of him as grows older.
This is where a more seasoned Russell has fit perfectly in. The 27-year-old has been around the block since he last suited up for LA and he has truly grown into one of the smarter point guards in the league. His impact has been evident in his nine games with the purple and gold in 2023. He is averaging 17.9 points with 6.4 assists so far and his bag of tricks is much deeper than his previous stint with us.
When it comes to being vocal on and off the court, D-Lo has also stepped up to that challenge but done so in a means of uplifting his teammates. In a recent interview with Mike Trudell of Spectrum SportsNet, he listed some important goals he has for the team this season.
"I just want to bring that fun back to this organization, bring that laughing factor, bring all of that, and let it translate on the floor," said Russell.
D-Lo has been welcomed with open arms again by the city of LA as they entrust him with the keys to guide back to the postseason. The Lakers team that started the year off 2-10 versus the team they have now are two completely different groups.
Russell was struggling to fit in with his previous Minnesota Timberwolves team and his stock was dropping. However, he has looked like a new man in the city of Angels again and it couldn't be at a better time.
