Lakers News: Former LA Fan Favorite Being Traded To East Play-In Team, Ending Reunion Rumors

There's always next year.

Your Los Angeles Lakers won't be reuniting with beloved backup point guard Dennis Schröder this year, after all.

Per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Toronto Raptors will flip Schröder and power forward Thaddeus Young to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for another veteran semi-backup point guard, Spencer Dinwiddie. And yes, both Dinwiddie and Schröder are on my fantasy team this year, so there's that.

It's a bummer.

Los Angeles opted to go in a different direction over the summer rather than retain Schröder, signing Gabe Vincent away from the Miami Heat on a three-year, $33 million deal. At the time, I loved the deal, figuring Vincent was a younger, better-shooting upgrade over Schröder, and might warrant a look at a starting gig over returning point guard D'Angelo Russell.

Vincent has played in five of the Lakers' 52 games, and will probably miss at least another month. Following his run to the NBA Finals with Miami last spring, it seems he may have pushed his health luck. He's been dealing with a left knee effusion all year, and finally opted for surgery.

Schröder, meanwhile, was playing solid two-way ball on a lottery-bound Raptors team, and earning a smidge more than his replacement in Los Angeles. He'll help shore up the depth of a reeling Nets club headed nowhere fast, and Lakers fans will just have to hope some appetizing buyout market candidates become available.
