Lakers News: NBA Introducing New In-Game Flopping Consequences in Summer League
In this social media era of sports, it feels like no missed calls or plays ever get by fans. It's been one thing for players to call out officiating but now that viewers can instantly see replays and pictures of plays that happened just seconds ago truly changes everything. We saw this last season on the court when LeBron James was infamously fouled by Jayson Tatum in a tight regular season match between the Lakers and Celtics. The refs swallowed their whistle and then Lakers guard Patrick Beverley grabbed a camera to show them the exact hit they had missed.
But beyond just missed calls and instant replay issues, the NBA has also been looking to do away with flopping. They have already started fining numerous players when the acting gets excessive but now as summer league gets fully underway, league officials are starting to implement a new rule where technicals will be handed out for flopping.
This news was announced by the NBA shortly before the California Classic kicked off on Monday.
"If a flopping penalty is assessed by game officials, the opposing team will be awarded one free throw and possession of the ball. A player who commits a flop will be assessed a non-unsports-manlike technical foul, which does not count as a personal foul or lead to ejection. Officials will not be required to stop live play to call a flopping violation, they can wait until the next neutral opportunity to stop play."
The Lakers have not had to worry about this yet even though they already have two summer league games under their belt.
However, the Oklahoma City Thunder were not as lucky as they made history.
I am glad to see that the league got this rule rolling because flopping does hurt the game and I am very intrigued to see how they assess these calls moving forward!
