Lakers News: NBA Vets Argue Over Details Of 2012 Audition For LA
The 2012-2013 Los Angeles Lakers squad had all the potential in the world but when it came down to it, health and lack of chemistry led to them barely sneaking into the playoffs and getting knocked out early. Future hall-of-famers in Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard and Steve Nash were all brought together in hopes of rivaling the star power of other contending teams like the Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Unfortunately, LA's vision for this roster never fully panned out and the blockbuster moves that landed them Howard and Nash resulted in just 45 wins and a first round playoff exit at the hand of the San Antonio Spurs.
However, leading up to that season, the purple and gold were looking at a number of role players to help fill out the rest of the roster and veterans Patrick Beverley and Rashad McCants were brought in by the team for private workouts to assess their potential fits.
Beverley most recently suited up for the Lakers in the 2022-2023 season and he has posted career averages of eight points and four rebounds across his 11 seasons in the league. McCants, on the other hand, lasted four seasons in the NBA and averaged 10 points and two rebounds.
Both of these veterans recently appeared on an episode of 'Gil's Arena' and had two very different stories about what happened in the Lakers workout in 2012. Beverley claimed that McCants quit early and McCants did his best to shut down that statement.
"He quit," said Beverley. "Coach Ham said you quit. I don't have to lie, what story? We hooped and I finished the workout, you didn't."
"I don't even know Pat like that to hear those words come out of his mouth," responded McCants.

We will likely have to wait for Darvin Ham or another coach that was present for the workout to confirm or deny Beverley's own story!
