Lakers News: Why Rival Teams Are Hesitant To Trade For D'Angelo Russell
As we near noon's 2023-24 NBA trade deadline, it appears that starting Los Angeles Lakers point guard D'Angelo Russell and his $17.3 million contract will be staying put.
During a recent episode of Zach Lowe's podcast The Lowe Post, ESPN experts Lowe and Chris Herring took stock of why Russell hasn't been attracting much interest from other teams.
"This dude could score 30 points a game for two months and people'd be like, 'Yeah I don't know if I want that guy on my team,'" Lowe joked.
"D'Angelo Russell will just straight-up tell you, essentially, 'I don't get paid for that.' ...Nobody wants to willingly take on a guy that's telling you, 'Defense is kind of a secondary, tertiary responsibility in my opinion,'" Herring offered. "It's the truth in terms of the way he thinks about it, but it doesn't speak to championship DNA... for certain teams. And I know that's what it is... But also we know he's hot and cold, that he is the guy that turns over the ball three times in a row before he has the balls to take and then make a game-winning shot, essentially."
