Lakers News: Writer Optimistic About Development Of Rookie Big Man

Can he make the NBA roster next season?
In this story:

It's no secret that the Lakers have lacked a strong presence from beyond the three-point line in recent years. They've tried to address the situation but it just hasn't panned out. Players percentages regress after putting on the purple and gold for some reason and it's been a trend. But entering into this crucial summer for the team, one player stands out.

Cole Swider went undrafted last season and signed with the team in hopes to make the roster. The young forward has a full season under his belt now and will be looking to grow and possibly make the team next year. Laker fans likely remember him from his Summer League magic last summer.

Robert Marvi of USA Today, seems to think that Swider could play a role for the Lakers at some point down the road.

"Swider has certainly looked like a project player who will take time to become NBA ready if he ever will does. But it looks like he has some potential if he puts in enough work."

He spent most of the year in the G-League, where he averaged 17.1 points per game and shot 43.6 percent from three. Swider has the ideal body type to have success at the NBA level as he stands at 6-foot-9 so he can shoot over smaller defenders.

Now Swider can shoot the lights out but his defense is a real concern. It's a main reason as to why he didn't click on with the Lakers this season. If he can work on his defensive ability and even get it to right about average for a NBA player, Swider could be a valuable piece in the league.

He likely won't ever be a starter in the NBA but could very well become a nice role player off the bench. This is an important summer for Swider to progress as a player as he hopes to make his NBA dreams come true.
