Lakers News: LeBron James, LA Top NBA In Merch Sales List Once Again
The NBA has unveiled its top-selling individual jerseys and team merchandise, and really, the results shouldn't surprise anyone.
As tends to be the case, Los Angeles Lakers All-Star small forward LeBron James and Golden State Warriors All-Star point guard Stephen Curry paced the pack in jersey sales on the league's NBAStore.com website. This year, James won out, with his iconic No. 6 jersey again leading the way.
The biggest surprises in the top 10, to yours truly anyway, are the continued popularity of controversial Dallas Mavericks point guard Kyrie Irving (10th in jersey sales), a one-way player who destroys his own teams wherever he goes, and the absence of Denver Nuggets All-NBA center Nikola Jokic (12th in jersey sales, behind Charlotte Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball) and Philadelphia 76ers All-NBA center Joel Embiid (13th). Jokic is the reigning two-time league MVP, while Embiid appears to be the odds-on favorite to claim the honor this year.
Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant, who fought a minor last summer, threatened a mall security guard and Indiana Pacers personnel, and was investigated by Colorado police for bringing a gun into a strip club, was also surprisingly popular through the season.
Fittingly, James' Lakers and Curry's Warriors finished first and second in overall team merchandise sales this year on NBAStore.com.
Your Los Angeles Lakers remain the most popular team in the NBA, at least by this metric, and LeBron James in his 20th season has only burnished his basketball immortality further with another All-Star season, despite missing several games as usual.
After (barely) winning last night's play-in matchup against the depleted Minnesota Timberwolves in overtime, James' Lakers will face off against Morant's Grizzlies starting this Sunday, at noon PT on ESPN.
