Lakers News: LA Steals Free Agent Finals Starter, Future Of D'Angelo Russell In Flux
The fireworks have started for the Los Angeles Lakers free agency. The team agreed to a three-year deal worth $33 million with now-former Miami Heat point guard Gabe Vincent, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Vincent heads to LA, departing South Beach after a success run with the Heat. He averaged 9.4 points per game and shot 33.4 percent from three. On the Miami run to the NBA Finals, his stats increased as the lights got brighter. In the postseason, he averaged 12.7 points and shot 37.8 percent from deep. It was quite the show for Vincent that now lands him in the city of angels.
This move may mean that the Lakers may not be bringing back one of their two unrestricted free agent point guards, starter D'Angelo Russell or his backup, Dennis Schröder.
Vincent is a tough defender who can hound an opposing teams' point guards while making clutch buckets on the other end, and it was all on full display in the postseason for Miami. This signing came out of nowhere, but gives the Lakers a real nice option at the guard spot.
Luxury tax considerations seem to have limited the Heat's ability to bring back perhaps their most essential free agent. We'll see if they're able to pivot effectively.
