Lakers News: Patrick Beverley Feels He Was Misused In Los Angeles

He's not wrong.

Patrick Beverley is in the midst of his Los Angeles Vengeance Tour. He's 1-1 against his former LA clubs thus far, having played a big part in vanquishing your Los Angeles Lakers Sunday in a 118-108 matinee win. He scored 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor against the Lakers, and chipped in five assists. During Monday's 124-112 loss to the Clippers (which was not nearly as close as that final score might suggest), Beverley notched a similar nine points on 3-of-6 shooting (3-of-5 from deep).

He next squares off against the Lakers again, at the United Center, tomorrow night.

Never the shrinking-violet type, Beverley weighed in on his relatively brief dalliance with the Lakers. Across 45 games with the Lakers (most of which he started out-of-position at shooting guard), Beverley averaged 6.4 points on .403/.346/.723 shooting splits, 3.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 0.9 steals. 

The 34-year-old started off the season on a brutal cold streak as a shooter, which cramped the team's spacing and limited his usefulness to mostly just perimeter defense. He rounded into form as the year wore on, but on an LA team without a lot of wing size or elite shooting, he was not a great cure for what ailed Lakers All-Star small forward LeBron James.

Small-ball-obsessed Lakers head coach Darvin Ham also trotted out occasional three-guard lineups with Beverley, Dennis Schroder and Russell Westbrook. They did not perform particularly well together.

Beverley spoke with K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago following Sunday's game about what went wrong with his Los Angeles tenure.

“If I’m a spoon, [Chicago head coach] Billy [Donovan] is using me as a spoon. With the Lakers, I was a spoon and they were using me as a fork. It’s just different,” Beverley opined. “But I’m fortunate that the Bulls called during the trade. I don’t want to let the city down. And obviously Billy and my players and this coaching staff, I don’t want to let them down. Just try to play the game the right way.”

In his 16 games as Chicago's starting point guard, he's averaging a similarly inefficient 6.3 points on .404/.339/.533 shooting splis, but a significantly more impactful 5.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

The Bulls have gone 10-6 since adding Beverley, while the Lakers are 12-6 following their active trade deadline, during which they offloaded Beverley to the Orlando Magic, who bought him out -- leading to his signing with Chicago.
