Lakers News: Top Assistant Phil Handy Confirms He’s Not Leaving LA For Phoenix

Major piece for the team stays!

The Lakers were able to retain a major piece to their coaching staff as assistant coach Phil Handy confirmed that he will be staying with the team. It had been rumored that Handy may depart Los Angeles for Phoenix after former Lakers coach Frank Vogel was hired on as the Suns head coach. But Handy is committed to LA and will be here for next season.

Handy is one of the more underrated coaches around the game and has a knack for helping develop players well. His impact on Rui Hachimura after the forward was acquired by LA this past season was apparent and it helped Hachimura grow his game. If Hachimura is back with the Lakers next year, it could be another big leap for him under the guidance of Handy.

The long-time coach has been with the Lakers since 2019 and is very familiar with star LeBron James. Handy was with James during his time in Cleveland prior to coming to Los Angeles. He has won three championships as an assistant coach so he brings a winning culture and experience with him as well.

Keeping him on the team is huge. He is one of the more respected assistant coaches around the NBA and has worked with a ton of star talent. Handy said that he signed up for more three years as the Lakers assistant under head coach Darvin Ham so he is here to stay.

Eventually Handy may look to finally get a head coaching role but for now he is in LA with the Lakers. He will be a key piece in helping the team try to bring back title number 18 next season.
