How Magic Coach Jamahl Mosley Began His Career

Jamahl Mosley opened up about his career before becoming the Orlando Magic head coach.
In this story:

ORLANDO - Jamahl Mosley is entering his third season coaching the Orlando Magic, but it marks his 19th year in the NBA.

Back in 2005, Mosley got his start as a player development coach for the Denver Nuggets, just a few miles outside his collegiate home at Colorado, where he played four seasons for the Buffaloes before a four-year overseas career.

"At that time, George Karl had taken the job with Denver, and the staff he put together for quite some time was John Welch and Tim Grgurich," Mosley said via The HoopsHype Podcast. "I knew John from my high school days. He said, “Come down and help work our guys out, whether you decide to stay or go back overseas.” In that time, it became apparent to me working with John and Tim, seeing their energy in the gym, how they taught, and how they pushed guys and pushed me to help figure out what I wanted to do."

Mosley spent two seasons as a player development coach before being promoted to an assistant on Karl's Nuggets staff. He spent three seasons in that role before joining Byron Scott's coaching staff with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010-11, the first year after LeBron James left to sign with the Miami Heat. Mosley spent four years in Cleveland before an eight-year tenure under Rick Carlisle on the Dallas Mavericks, which parlayed into being the lead man of the Magic in 2021.

It's been a long road for Mosley to get to this point, but he still has a ways to go, and he's ready to take the steps necessary to get closer this season.
