Magic Loses Fifth and Final Summer League Matchup
The Orlando Magic (0-5) appeared in their fifth and final game of Summer League, ultimately coming up short against the Boston Celtics (2-3) in a 94-77 game.
Without their lottery pick guards Anthony Black (pick No. 6) and Jett Howard (pick No. 11), the Magic got off a to a quick start. They had a mid-quarter 11-2 run to give them a seven-point lead, but back to back Celtics 3-pointers erased that lead.
In the first quarter, the scoring approach was balances across the squad, as six of the eight players that saw action scored. The Magic led the Celtics 20-16 after the first frame.
After leading the first quarter, the Magic remained inefficient, whereas things turned up for the Celtics. The Celtics opened up the second quarter with a 10-0 run, which helped them take a lead.
Orlando's top performer in the half was Elijah Hughes, who scored 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, knocking down three 3-pointers in the half.
The Celtics were playing the cleaner game of the two, with less fouls and turnovers while assisting on more baskets in the first half.
Both teams started the second half well, but the Magic would struggle to keep this up past the mid-quarter mark. With just under three minutes to go in the third quarter, the Celtics pushed their lead to 20 points, which was the point differential through three quarters.
The fourth quarter sang the same tune. The Celtics maintained their steep lead and players got one last chance at showing their capabilities before trying to land a two-way or G League contract for the upcoming season.
Filipino center Kai Sotto got just eight minutes of actions, whereas the other eight players that saw the court saw right around or more than 20 minutes. The Celtics took the opposite approach, as they played every active player at least double-digit minutes.
Quinndary Weatherspoon, Robert Baker and Hughes were the Magic's respective leaders offensively. Baker led the team with 15 points, Hughes followed up with 13 points and Weatherspoon scored 11 points.
Amauri Hardy added 11 points off the bench as well. Again, none of these guys are likely NBA standard contract players, but they could be two-way contract targets.
