ORLANDO - Orlando Magic guard Jalen Suggs is hoping to honor 35 years worth of franchise history during the upcoming season.

“They accomplished almost everything that I want to do and us as a team want to do,” Suggs said. “They won, got to the highest level and set a standard. They made this place where you come in and play great basketball while surrounded by great people in your locker room.

“That’s what we’re chasing as an organization — the greatness that they achieved.”

Suggs was at an event at the Amway Center for the Magic unveiling new jerseys and a new court scheme as a part of a season-long 35th anniversary celebration for the team. In attendance along with Suggs were former Magic players like Hedo Turkoglu, Rashard Lewis and Ryan Anderson.

The 22-year-old guard from St. Paul, Minn. has had a lot of expectations to perform after he was drafted with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga University.

In two NBA seasons, Suggs has averaged 10.8 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per game and 3.2 assists per game. He also provides strong perimeter defense, averaging 1.2 steals per game and 0.5 blocks per game.

It hasn't been a smooth first two seasons in the NBA for Suggs, as a few injuries have prevented him from getting a full season in. In 2021-22 he played in 48 games and in 2022-23 he played in 53 games.

The upcoming NBA season will be the most important of Suggs' career. The Magic will have a decision to make in the near future on whether they want to extend him or let him see restricted free agency.

His first chance to see game action again will be when the preseason begins, starting with Orlando going on the road to take on the New Orleans Pelicans on Oct. 10 at 8 p.m.
