Magic Ex Jameer Nelson Due For Front Office Promotion?
There is a long list of NBA point guards transitioning into coaching and front office roles once their playing days are over.
From Jason Kidd (Dallas Mavericks), to Steve Kerr (Golden State Warriors) and even Chauncey Billups (Portland Trail Blazers), all of which were former floor generals turned NBA head coaches.
And former Orlando Magic guard and one-time All Star Jameer Nelson is no different. The former first-round pick called it quits in 2018 following a 17-year career, but wasted no time transitioning into a front office role.
Now serving as the assistant general manager for the Delaware Blue Coats -- the G League affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers -- Nelson was named to a list of potential front office employees who could be in line for a promotion soon.
"Jameer Nelson, the former All-Star point guard, has become a valued member of Philadelphia’s front office, cutting his teeth primarily with the team’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats," Yahoo! Sports insider Jake Fischer writes.
Since taking over position in November of 2020, Nelson has propelled the Blue Coats to one of the G League's best teams over the past three seasons, leading them to a 52-27 mark over that span including back-to-back finals appearance. And following a 20-12 regular season record, Delaware took home the title this past year after sweeping the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the best-of-three series.
With a proven ability to lead a team on the court and in the front office, it should only be a matter of time before the former Magic guard receives a promotion.
