Paolo Banchero Reveals Orlando Magic's Strengths & Weaknesses
After the Orlando Magic started the season off 2-2 through the team’s first four games, Paolo Banchero revealed where the team was successful versus where it has fallen short early.
“We pride ourselves on defense, Banchero said. “It’s always good to know that we can count on that side of the ball; we’ve just gotta pick up on the other end.”
So far, the Magic has allowed the fewest points to be scored against them of any team in the league at 101. 8, but the offense hasn’t been performing at the same level. The team is tied for the eighth-fewest points scored per game in the entire NBA.
Although defense is known to win championships, Banchero is aware that the team must score in order to capitalize on how elite Orlando’s defense is.
“My main focus is trying to make shots,” Banchero said. “It’s been rough so far. But it’s going to come. We gotta make shots, make free throws. That’s the main focus for us, just putting the ball in the basket.”
The reigning Rookie of the Year has gotten off to a slow start this season, averaging just 12.5 points while shooting 37.8 percent from the field, significantly worse than his 20 points per game a season ago on 42.7 percent shooting.
Despite the struggles the Magic have had scoring the ball, Banchero’s focus is on the next road game against the Utah Jazz tonight at 9 p.m.
“The only thing on our minds right now is getting the win in Utah,” Banchero said. “I think finishing the road trip .500 would be big as a team and a big boost going home.”
