Magic's Paolo Banchero Sidelined in USA Loss vs. Canada
The third-place consolation game of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Manila was not only a domestic struggle between New Yorkers but also a North American hardwood civil war, one that ended in a 127-118 overtime victory for Canada's men's national team over that of the United States.
With the win, Canada (6-2) earned its first-ever World Cup medal in 15 appearances, capping off one of the most lucrative runs in program history. Team USA, on the other hand, will not visit the World Cup podium for the second occasion, a dubious first on their illustrious ledgers.
Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero did not play in the game due to illness. He was joined on the sidelines by Memphis Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr. and New Orleans Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram.
Canada's primary scoring triumvirate featuring RJ Barrett (New York Knicks), Dillon Brooks (Houston Rockets) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder) led the way against the Americans.
In an effort that earned "MVP" chants from the crowd assembled at SM Mall of Asia Arena, Brooks did a little bit of everything, pairing a five-rebound, four-assist output with 39 points on 12-of-18 from the field. Gilgeous-Alexander completed the double-double with 31 points and 12 assists while also hauling in six rebounds. Barrett added 23 points and seven rebounds.
The American scoring was led by Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves) with 24. Austin Reaves (LA Lakers) scored 23.
Both Canada and the United States have qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris by virtue of standing as the top two finishing teams between North and South America.
