Magic's Paolo Banchero Debuts With Team USA
Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero made his Team USA debut, and it came in an exhibition match against Puerto Rico.
With the amount of talent on the roster, Banchero made his debut off the bench, but still received a good deal of playing time, tallying nearly 17 minutes.
In his time in the game, Banchero was both effective and efficient, scoring seven points on 3 of 4 shooting while adding both a rebound and assist.
The Magic forward is gaining valuable experience ahead of his second pro season. Playing alongside other premiere talents will help Banchero take the leap to lead the Magic to potential postseason play in the upcoming season.
The former Rookie of the Year is also going to be able to compete at a level in which there is pressure and expectation when these games are real FIBA World Cup games, not just exhibition games.
For Banchero, he will be able to treat these games as must-wins to emulate a play-in or playoff environment for himself. Evidently, that will be the best thing to add to his upcoming season as a player that will be in the driver's seat.
Playing on a team full of talent like Team USA has, the 6-foot-10 forward doesn't exactly complement the starting lineup. Banchero is at his best when the ball is able to be in his hands and the offense is running through him.
With Banchero playing in a role that forces him to be more of a "role player" may benefit him, though, as he's consistently been the top option. He may be able to learn more and grow as a star by seeing the game in a new way.
As Team USA continues through their exhibition games, it'll be interesting to watch what role Banchero plays and if it results in more points or scoring opportunities for him.
