Beer-Chugging Mavs Target Draymond Green Signs for $100 Million with Warriors

Dallas has re-signed Kyrie Irving (highly significant) and shooter Seth Curry (his third stint here). But “defense and rebounding”? Golden State keeps that with Draymond Green.

DALLAS - For the Dallas Mavs, part of the idea was a sort of, “If you can’t beat him, get him to join you” thing. But four -time NBA champion, 2017 Defensive Player of the Year and bad chugger of beer Draymond Green - a subject of Mavs speculation - has agreed to return to the Golden State Warriors.

With the NBA free agency window opening on Friday, Green quickly closed on a four-year, $100 million contract.

The 33-year-old veteran, a notable personality and a defensive force of nature, averaged 8.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.8 assists in 31.5 minutes over 73 games for the Warriors this past season. The numbers are fine, but the results are better as he earned his eighth spot on the All-Defensive roster.

“Defense and rebounding” are part of Dallas’ roster-building pledge. In the early going, that hasn’t happened yet … not counting the first-round drafting of 7-1 Duke center Dereck Lively II, who Dallas dreams could grow up to be Tyson Chandler-like.

So far, Dallas has re-signed Kyrie Irving (highly significant) and shooter Seth Curry (his third stint here). But “defense and rebounding”? While Golden State's standout offense led by Steph Curry gets the headlines, Green gets it done in ways the Mavs covet … and will continue to search for as owner Mark Cuban, GM Nico Harrison and the Dallas front office digs in to the weekend of activities.
