What Chris Paul Warriors Trade Means For Kyrie Irving, Mavs

The Golden State Warriors have once again stunned the NBA, trading for Chris Paul from the Washington Wizards. What does that mean for the Dallas Mavericks?
In this story:

The basketball world is stunned after the Washington Wizards traded Chris Paul to the Golden State Warriors hours ahead of the NBA Draft.

In the deal, the Warriors sent Jordan Poole, Ryan Rollins, a 2027 second-round selection and a 2030 first-round pick for Paul.

Paul, 38, is expected to stay with the Warriors in their pursuit for a fifth championship since 2015.

But what does this all mean for the Dallas Mavericks?

After Paul's trade earlier this week from the Phoenix Suns to the Wizards, it appeared that the future Hall-of-Fame point guard was headed towards a buyout, which would have made him a free agent.

Paul was linked to the Los Angeles Lakers or a reunion with the L.A. Clippers, where he played from 2011-17. However, now that he's joining their rival up in San Francisco, both the Lakers and Clippers are seeking a point guard ... and both could be a destination for Kyrie Irving in free agency.

Between the two, the Lakers are more likely of a destination for Irving.

The Clippers could make room for Irving, but that would likely require the team to trade Paul George. The Lakers have been connected to Irving due to his relationship with LeBron James. While Irving, a free agent this summer, has tried recruiting LeBron to the Mavs to join him and Luka Doncic, it's far easier for the two to have a reunion in Los Angeles, where the Lakers would only have to sign Irving as opposed to Dallas having to sign Kyrie and trade for James.

The trade also makes the Warriors, who beat the Mavs in last year's Western Conference Finals, a bigger threat to win it all again in the West ... and Dallas will now paint a target on Golden State's back.
