Greg St. Jean Out as Mavs Assistant; Could Ex-Lakers Coach Frank Vogel Join Jason Kidd's Staff?

The Dallas Mavericks are having to make a coaching change, as assistant coach Greg St. Jean won't be back on Jason Kidd's staff next season.
In this story:

Nearly two weeks ago, NBA Insider Marc Stein reported that the Dallas Mavericks were adding a new voice to their front office by hiring former long-tenured Utah Jazz executive Dennis Linsey. On Wednesday, ESPN's Tim MacMahon reported another change is coming the Mavs' way this summer, and this time it has to do with head coach Jason Kidd's coaching staff.

"Sources: Assistant coach Greg St. Jean will not return to the Mavs’ coaching staff," MacMahon tweeted. "Jason Kidd brought St. Jean to Dallas from the Lakers and promoted him to first row last season. The Mavs will look to add more experience to Kidd’s staff."

One logical assistant-coach replacement for Kidd's staff would be former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel. Kidd was on Vogel's staff as an assistant when the Lakers won the 2020 NBA championship in the Orlando Bubble, and he credits Vogel for helping him grow into being a better coach than he was with the Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets earlier in his coaching career.

“Frank Vogel prepared me for this and then also my early stops in Brooklyn and Milwaukee," Kidd said after the Mavs advanced to the Western Conference Finals last season. "Just understanding, putting guys in a position to be successful and then also listening to your star player; he wants to have fun, so let’s have fun. And the accountability piece, those are the words that we talked about this season, and that’s what we hold each other accountable. It’s those words that we came up with and no one’s exempt from them."

Vogel was seen hanging around the Mavs' practices on multiple occasions in the last year – once in training camp in September and then another time in January. The Mavs surely have a full list of potential candidate to fill in St. Jean's spot, but we won't be surprised if Vogel ends up being on the shortlist, assuming he doesn't get another head-coaching position elsewhere.
