Mavs' Dereck Lively II 'Off Limits' in Trade Talks Before Deadline; Possible Targets

Mavs rookie Dereck Lively II has already solidified himself as a player the team will not include in trade talks despite being a rookie.

The Dallas Mavericks view rookie center Dereck Lively II as off-limits for rival teams conducting trade discussions before the NBA midseason deadline.

According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, multiple teams have shown interest in acquiring Lively. The Mavs have made clear the promising center is not available for trade despite him generating interest from around the league.

"Mavericks center Dereck Lively has drawn trade interest from rival teams, but Dallas has told those who’ve called he’s not for sale, league sources told HoopsHype," Scotto reported

The Mavs have continued to explore the trade market for a significant upgrade at the power forward position. The team was linked to Pascal Siakam before he was traded to the Indiana Pacers. However, they have been monitoring Jerami Grant from Portland and may also consider adding Kyle Kuzma to their watchlist shortly. Other reports have linked P.J. Washington and Dorian Finney-Smith, among others.

Lively has significantly impacted the Mavs despite being just a rookie. The original expectation was that it would take him a few years to develop into an impactful player. Still, he made significant strides in his development after the NBA Summer League — providing the team with confidence in an immediate impact. He was named the starting center after his NBA career debut and has remained in the role since.

Lively has averaged 8.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 31 games this season. He's emerged as the team's clear-cut top rim protector and interior play finisher, being the backbone of the defense and a top relief option for Luka Doncic.

Scotto reported potential Mavs trade candidates being a combination of Josh Green, Jaden Hardy, Grant Williams, and draft capital when attempting to upgrade at the power forward position — a widely reported priority for the team to improve. The team only has a 2027 first-round pick eligible to be included in a midseason trade regarding outright moveable first-round selections.

As the trade deadline nears, the Mavs appear positioned for a playoff run, making them an exciting team to follow during this period of potential roster changes. Adding talent around Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and Lively is a clear priority.
