Mavs' Derrick Jones Jr. Suffers Wrist Sprain After Hard Fall vs. Hawks
ATLANTA — During the second quarter of the Dallas Mavericks' matchup against the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night, Derrick Jones Jr. tried to pull off a poster dunk but landed hard on his wrist.
Jones returned to the locker room after the play occurred, resulting in him landing on his wrist. He was ruled out, with the team describing his injury as being a left wrist sprain. He finished with two points, one rebound, and one assist in 18 minutes.
Jones, who started the game alongside Luka Doncic, Dereck Lively II, Josh Green, and Grant Williams to begin the game, was replaced by Dante Exum to begin the second half.
The Mavs already entered their game against the Hawks without Kyrie Irving (right thumb sprain), Maxi Kleber (right small toe dislocation), and Dwight Powell (left eye corneal abrasion) available to play. The extent of Jones' injury remains to be seen until more information is available.
"Next man up mentality," Mavs coach Jason Kidd said before Friday's game. "Every time we feel like we're getting healthy, we take a step or two back. It's just part of the game, you got to go with the guys in uniform [and] put those guys in a position to be successful, support them, be positive, and try to find a way to win on the road."
RED HOT: Mavs' Luka Doncic Scorches Hawks with 41 First-Half Points
Given the Mavs are on the first night of a back-to-back with a matchup against the Sacramento Kings at American Airlines Center on Saturday night, another injury for Dallas to deal with could prove challenging.
