NBA Buyout Market: Mavs Frontrunners to Sign Former Magic Guard Terrence Ross
SACRAMENTO — After Friday's shootaround, Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison spoke to reporters and was asked about the buyout market. He made clear that options will be explored.
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Mavs have emerged as the frontrunner to sign former Orlando Magic wing Terrence Ross once he becomes available to sign with a team on the buyout market.
Ross, who has appeared in 42 games, is averaging 8.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 22.5 minutes per game this season. He's shooting 43.1 percent from the floor and 38.1 percent from 3-point range. He's been one of the more efficient spot-up players and pick-and-roll ball scorers in the NBA this season.
Given the emergence of Josh Green and rookie Jaden Hardy's trust, the team felt that signing a veteran ball handler was no longer necessary. Earlier in the season, the Mavs attempted to find a veteran third ball handler in the form of Facundo Campazzo and Kemba Walker, but neither player lasted long with the team.
"We have a third ball handler," Mavs GM Nico Harrison said. "Josh Green has shown he can handle the ball and run the offense. ... We have ball handling covered at a high level."
With the Mavs parting with Finney-Smith, one logical target the Mavs could make is a wing player. It tends to be difficult to address that need using the buyout market since teams tend to hold onto those types of players.
"I think we have most of the things covered," Harrison said. "Just some wing depth out there that makes sense. Maybe some defense."
