Mavs to Hire Suns’ Bryan Gates; Will Join Jason Kidd’s Coaching Staff

The Dallas Mavericks continue to fill out Jason Kidd's coaching staff amid the NBA's free-agency frenzy.

In addition to all the roster changes the Dallas Mavericks have already made – and they hope to continue to make moves in the next week or so through trades and free agency – Jason Kidd's coaching staff is undergoing a series of changes as well.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Mavs added former Utah Jazz assistant coach Alex Jensen to Kidd's staff, and now, they're adding veteran assistant Bryan Gates as well. Gates was on Monty Williams' coaching staff with the Phoenix Suns over the last two season.

Gates has been in the NBA since 2009, and aside from his time in Phoenix, he's had coaching stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sacramento Kings and New Orleans Pelicans as well. It has yet to be seen if any interest remains on Dallas' end when it comes to potentially adding former coach and ESPN broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy to Kidd's staff, but Tuesday's series of moves makes us think that's not likely to happen.

The Mavs accomplished their biggest summer goal, which was to retain the services of star point guard Kyrie Irving. Between bringing Irving back on a three-year deal worth $126 million, drafting Dereck Lively II and OMax Prosper, and signing Seth Curry to the $4.5 million BAE, the Dallas front office has done a good job upgrading around the margins given the cards they've been dealt. Move are still expected to come, though, as restricted free agency gets underway on Thursday and trade talks continue to be had.
