Dallas Mavs' Jason Kidd Shares Kyrie Irving Injury Update, Goals for Match vs. Real Madrid
MADRID, Spain — The Dallas Mavericks have been preparing for the final game of a 12-day international trip that has featured stops in Abu Dhabi and Madrid. The final match will be against Real Madrid on Oct. 10 at WiZink Center, with a 1:45 p.m. CST tipoff time.
After the Mavs practiced on Monday, the team offered an update on the groin injury that sidelined Kyrie Irving in the team's Oct. 7 loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Abu Dhabi.
"No, he's out for tomorrow's game," Mavs coach Jason Kidd said of Irving. "The soreness is still growing. He did some stuff today, but he will not participate tomorrow."
The Mavs are satisfied with the effort level the team has played with so far in preseason and remain confident entering the match against Real Madrid after having a "great" practice on Monday.
"The guys have done a great job. We've started this trip to Abu Dhabi. They've done everything we've asked as coaches. They're playing hard. We've got different lineups, and right now, we've had some injuries we have to address. I think the group is playing hard, and we had a great practice today."
Kidd is happy for Luka Doncic to have a chance to compete against his former team in the city he called home for years. The Mavs have appreciated the opportunity to experience Doncic's former setting in the days leading into the match.
"It's exciting for Luka to come back home to be able to play where it all started," Kidd said. "It's a beautiful city. And I'm sure he'll do his best. So, we're good with him tomorrow."
The Mavs want to focus on staying more active by getting into dribble handoffs to keep the offense moving instead of relying on too many pick-and-rolls. The team is confident in their shooting, recovering after two poor games from deep, but also wants to emphasize rebounding the ball.
"I think we have to move the ball a little bit more. We're just running too many pick-and-rolls," Kidd said. "We have to be able to move, play a little bit more out of the DHO, and stay away from the pick-and-rolls.
"And then, defensively, we have to rebound the ball," Kidd explained. "That's something that we've been talking about since Day 1. We're creating a lot of open 3s. We believe those will go down for us as we go forward."
