Dallas Mavs, Josh Green Agree to 3-Year Contract Extension; Details
DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks faced a 4:00 p.m. CST deadline on Monday to agree on a contract extension with Josh Green. Both sides ultimately came to an agreement, which ended the chance of him entering restricted free agency next summer.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Green will receive a three-year, $41 million contract extension from the Mavs. He will be signed with the team through the 2026-27 season. .
Green is coming off a career year averaging 9.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 60 games. He continued to display improvement as a perimeter shooter after struggling to make open shots during the Mavs' run to the Western Conference Finals in 2022. Green shot 53.7 percent from the floor and 40.2 percent from distance.
The Mavs remained intent on not including Green in trade talks during the offseason, keeping him off the table in reported discussions with the Atlanta Hawks in a possible deal to acquire Clint Capela. It remains to be seen whether Green will start alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving on the wing or come off the bench.
It was reported ahead of the FIBA World Cup in August that Green's representation and the Mavs had opened contract extension talks. However, a firm development had yet to transpire between that development, even through the days leading to the contract extension deadline.
Green has continually expressed his desire to remain a member of the Mavs long-term, but he's well aware of the business side of basketball and the need to remain focused on the task at hand regardless of the outcome at the negotiation table.
"I know I want to be here. I'm going to work as if I'm going to be here for a long time. I want to be able to win in Dallas," Green said on Media Day. "I'm going to be in Dallas. Whatever their decision, it is their decision. I have the same goal every single day, and that's just to be the best teammate or the best player I can be for the team."
Ahead of the Mavs' preseason finale against the Pistons, Green spoke to reporters after practice. His message remained consistent about trusting his representation team at CAA to handle his contract talks. Meanwhile, he focuses on preparing for the Mavs' regular-season opener against the Spurs.
“There’s a deadline, but the 25th is the first game of the season,” Green said after Thursday's practice. “For me, that’s my main priority. So whatever happens, happens. I’m just letting my agents and the front office take care of that, but my eye is on the 25th and beating the Spurs and getting off to a good start.”
