'I Really Feel Wanted': Kyrie Irving's First Thoughts on Joining Doncic’s Mavs

Newly acquired Kyrie Irving spoke on his feelings of being a Maverick vs. the treatment that forced him out of Brooklyn.
In this story:

If you thought the Dallas Mavericks were a huge spectacle before with just Luka Doncic … just wait.

After acquiring eight-time All-Star Kyrie Irving via trade on Sunday, all eyes are on the Mavericks to see how this is merely a rental or if the marriage will work out long-term.

Irving spoke to the media for the first time as a member of the Mavericks on Tuesday following his first practice.

"I really feel wanted," Irving said after Tuesday's practice. "I know that they had to give up some pieces for me to get here so I don't take that for granted."

Those pieces were Dorian Finney-Smith and Spencer Dinwiddie, along with an unprotected 2029 first-round pick and two future second-rounders.

Irving followed up his feelings of becoming a Dallas Maverick with how he felt on his way out of Brooklyn, which led to him requesting a trade.

"I just know I want to be places I'm celebrated and not just tolerated or kind of dealt with in a way that doesn't make me feel respected,” Irving said. “There were times throughout this process when I was in Brooklyn when I felt very disrespected."

Irving seems to be happy that he landed in Dallas, which is huge for the Mavericks. Landing a disgruntled superstar is the last thing a team wants because it could go south quick.

Knowing that Irving has relationships with Nico Harrison and Jason Kidd definitely gives Dallas a sense of comfort. Knowing just how bad the Mavericks wanted this deal to get done, that should put Irving and Dallas in a good spot going forward.

*fingers crossed*
