Mavs' Kyrie Irving on Chances of Playing Against Spurs: 'Not Looking Good'
SAN ANTONIO — When the Dallas Mavericks take on the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, they will be doing so without Luka Doncic in the lineup. It sounds as though they are expected to not have Kyrie Irving in the lineup again, either.
Irving has been listed as questionable on the Mavs' injury report since he played 41 minutes against the New Orleans Pelicans last week. He expressed how the injury is worse than he initially thought.
"We're going to see, but it's not looking good," Irving told ESPN. "This injury on my foot, it's going to take a little bit more than I thought. It's obviously still day-to-day, but we've just got to take more time."
Irving explained: "It's right around my big toe, right around my plantar. I took a wrong step in New Orleans and it just felt like my knuckles cracked. I just wanted to take precautionary [measures] at this point in the season I make my whole entire living with my feet, so I'd rather take are of it now than when I'm 40 years old."
The goal for Irving and the rest of the Mavs is for the team to get healthy so they can make a push with enough time remaining in the regular season. Doing so, however, will leave the team with seemingly no margin for error.
"We've love to be out there, including myself," Irving said. "But we've just got to get our health right first and then try to make a push towards the end of the season."
The Mavs could face an even greater depleted cast of available players for Wednesday's matchup than their previous outing, which featured Doncic, Irving, and Christian Wood all being sidelined due to injury. Wood remains questionable to play with right foot soreness, while Tim Hardaway Jr. has joined the injury report as questionable with a left calf contusion.
If Irving is unable to play against the Spurs, his next chance to return to the lineup will be on Friday in a matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers.
