Mavs LISTEN: Kyrie 'Long Term' Comments & LeBron, Draymond Pipe-Dream Offseason

With five games remaining in the season, the Mavs Step Back Podcast takes a look at the Dallas Mavericks’ postseason chances, Kyrie Irving’s encouraging recent comments and offseason speculation regarding LeBron James and Draymond Green potentially joining Irving and Luka Doncic.
In this story:

With just five more games to go, the Dallas Mavericks are on the outside looking in when it comes to postseason positioning. They’re currently the No. 11 seed, trailing the Oklahoma City Thunder by one game for the final play-in spot in the Western Conference standings.

No matter how the end of the season unfolds, the Mavs and their fan base have to be encouraged by star point guard Kyrie Irving’s comments after Wednesday’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

“I think the realistic view is that when I came here, that this was going to be a growing process,” Irving said.

"This was for the long term, and this was for something that's bigger than ourselves and we can't just be a championship team overnight.”

Irving is set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of June, and although nothing is final until pen meets paper — as the Mavs have painfully found out firsthand on several occasions over the years — we believe Irving’s comments are genuine.

On today’s episode of the Mavs Step Back Podcast, we discuss Irving’s postgame comments at length after recapping yet another disappointing loss. From there, we also touch on recent free agency and trade speculation — specifically, the pipe-dream scenario of both LeBron James and Draymond Green making their way to Dallas in the offseason.

If Irving has already made up his mind to stay in Dallas long term, perhaps he’s gotten wind of certain roster changes that could be coming. Or maybe he already knows the Mavs will give him the contract he wants. Regardless, we should be in for yet another exciting summer. Hopefully, this time, though, it will be exciting in a good way.
