Ja Morant Unbothered By West Adding Mavs' Kyrie Irving, Suns' Kevin Durant
DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks made a blockbuster trade to acquire Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets. Less than a week later, Irving's former co-star, Kevin Durant, was the next big name on the move, landing with the Phoenix Suns.
Among the teams that did not make a significant change ahead of the Feb. 9 trade deadline is Ja Morant's Memphis Grizzlies. While that may be the case, it wasn't for lack of effort, as they even pursued Durant before he was moved to the Suns.
Earlier in the season, Morant had declared his Grizzlies squad as being "fine in the West" when ESPN's Malika Andrews asked which teams he viewed as threats amidst title contention aspirations. The only team he mentioned was the Boston Celtics.
“No one in the West,” Andrews asked.
“Nah, I’m fine in the West,” Morant responded.
Now that Durant and Irving are joining reigning All-NBA First-Team talents on Western Conference contenders, does Morant view his Grizzlies still as being "fine in the West" after re-evaluating the landscape?
“I don’t care. Honestly. I said what I said, and I mean that,” Morant said after the Grizzlies 119-109 loss to the Boston Celtics on Sunday. “The confidence I had when I said that, is the confidence that got us to the point we’re at now, being a top team in this league.”
Regardless of what other teams do in terms of roster trades, Morant expresses confidence in his Grizzlies to achieve their goals. Given they hold a 34-22 record and rank second in the Western Conference standings, it's certainly understandable why Morant would feel such a way.
“Yeah, my confidence will never change. I don’t care who got something to say about it.”
