Free Agency: Mavs Interested in ‘Several Forwards,’ Including Kelly Oubre Jr.
As the Dallas Mavericks continue to evaluate options to add talent around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the team still has spending power in free agency. The top names have already signed new contracts, but there are still some options remaining.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Mavs have expressed exploratory interest in various free agents, including Kelly Oubre Jr. and Derrick Jones Jr.
"In other news, the Mavericks have also expressed exploratory interest in several free agent forwards, including Kelly Oubre Jr. and Derrick Jones Jr., league sources told HoopsHype."
Oubre is coming off a season with the Charlotte Hornets, averaging 20.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in 32.2 minutes per game. The 27-year-old was shooting 43.1 percent from the floor, 31.9 percent on 3s, and 76.0 percent on free throws. At 6-foot-6, he doesn't tend to offer a defensive impact or much off-ball offensive impact, but is a more capable scorer than most wings available.
Jones appeared in 64 games with the Chicago Bulls last season, averaging 5.0 points and 2.4 rebounds in 14.0 minutes per game. He shot 50.0 percent overall and 33.8 percent from beyond the arc. He is better equipped setting screens and playing in the dunker spot than spacing out, but does offer defensive versatility.
The Mavs have reshaped their roster a lot already this offseason, starting by adding Dereck Lively II and Olivier-Maxence Prosper using the NBA Draft. Dallas then re-signed Kyrie Irving and Dwight Powell, while adding Seth Curry and Dante Exum in free agency. Grant Wiliams was later acquired using a sign-and-trade.
There is still a sense that the Mavs would make an upgrade at the center position if possible, but the trade market doesn't tend to offer many options that satisfy not sending out too much value in a trade and financial flexibility as Lively develops.
