NBA Player Compares Future WNBA Star Caitlin Clark to Mavs' Luka Doncic
Chicago Bulls guard Coby White visited Iowa City during the NBA All-Star break to support his girlfriend's sister, Cameron Williams, who plays for Michigan. In the process, he witnessed Iowa star Caitlin Clark breaking Kelsey Plum's all-time scoring record of 3,527 points.
Clark set the record early in her performance by scoring the first three made field goals for the Hawkeyes, with an off-the-dribble 3-pointer being the history-making shot. White described the experience and Clark's achievement as "dope," impressed by her skillful display on the court.
“It was dope,” White told Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune. “Obviously I watched her on TV, but it’s a lot different seeing her in person. She’s crazy good. She’s talented, super skilled. For her to hit the logo 3 to break the record, that was a dope moment."
While observing Clark's game, White compared her style of play to Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic. White sees parallels in how they are both dynamic perimeter shot creators and brilliant playmakers, particularly with how they utilize change of pace and deceive the defense by controlling the game in the half-court.
"The way that she controls the game and playmakes and gets everybody involved, but also, the step backs in her shot, she reminds me a lot of [Luka Doncic]... They both can control the game so well and get to their spot. She gets to any spot she wants to, she manipulates pick-and-roll. She knows how to use change of pace.
"She's not really fast, but she's so deceptive with the ball that that she can get past anybody, any defender," White explained. "When I was watching her, Luka came to mind."
It's high praise to compare any player to Doncic, but Clark's dynamic highlights and general talent make it possible to compare in such a regard.
