Dallas Mavs’ Luka Doncic, Ex Teammate Jalen Brunson Win Player Of The Month Honors
SAN FRANCISCO — In additon to being named Western Conference Player of the Week, Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic was named the Western Conference Player of the Month on Tuesday. His former teammate, Jalen Brunson, was named the recipient for the Eastern Conference.
Doncic joins Jayson Tatum as the only players to earn Player of the Month multiple times this season and holds the most Player of the Week nominations. With the Mavs continuing to trend upward in the Western Conference standings — ranking fifth entering Tuesday's NBA action — Doncic has potentially made ground in the MVP race.
Doncic averaged 32.5 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 10.1 assists in March, becoming the second time in his career he's averaged a 30-point triple-double for a month. His first time doing so was in November 2019. He joins Oscar Robertson and Russell Westbrook as the only plays in NBA history to average a 30-point triple-double for a month.
“I’ve been in this league for five years now, so I’m just understanding the game and learning the game and just maturing,” Doncic said. “I’m better this season, so I’ve just got to keep going like that.”
The Slovenian superstar has earned Western Conference Player of the Month in consecutive months, becoming the first player in Mavs history to do so. He joins Dirk Nowitzki as the only players in the history of the organization to receive the honor twice within the same season.
It's been a continued historic campaign for Doncic, who has averaged a career-high 34.0 points to lead the NBA in scoring. He trails only Tyrese Haliburton in assists per game (9.8) while setting a career-high in that category as well. He's set to become the first player to ever average 33 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists for a season.
If Doncic doesn't come away with the MVP award, he appears to be one of the few locks for an All-NBA First-Team nomination at this point. It would be his fifth consecutive season earning that honor, passing Nowitzki for the most in Mavs history.
