Mavs GM Nico Harrison Reveals Dallas’ NBA Buyout Market Strategy

Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison spoke to reporters after Friday's shootaround and revealed the team's possible use of the buyout market.

SACRAMENTO — The Dallas Mavericks made a splashy trade to acquire NBA All-Star starter Kyrie Irving ahead of the NBA trade deadline. They moved Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith to get the deal done and didn't end up making a second move before the cutoff.

The next option for the Mavs to use their final roster spot could be to wait for the buyout market to heat up. With a significant amount of trade activity around the NBA, there are expected to be a lot of buyouts.

Earlier in the season, the Mavs attempted to find a veteran third ball handler in the form of Facundo Campazzo and Kemba Walker. Neither player managed to stick with the team for long. With no shortage of possible veteran guards set to hit the buyout market now, could they look to sign one?

"We have a third ball handler," Mavs GM Nico Harrison said. "Josh Green has shown he can handle the ball and run the offense. ... We have ball handling covered at a high level."

With the Mavs parting with Finney-Smith, one possible target the Mavs could make is a wing player. It tends to be difficult to address that need using the buyout market since teams tend to hold onto those types of players.

"I think we have most of the things covered," Harrison said. "Just some wing depth out there that makes sense. Maybe some defense."

Regarding possible names commonly speculated as buyout candidates that fit the wing need, Danny Green, Terrence Ross, and Will Barton come to mind. With the objective being to add a defensive contributor, perhaps Green makes the most sense.
