Mavs LISTEN: Kyrie Irving Electric in Home Debut; Growing Pains with Luka Doncic?

The Dallas Mavericks nearly completed a 26-point comeback against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night, but some indecision between Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving on the final possession ultimately led to a 124-121 loss at home.
In this story:

The Dallas Mavericks' dynamic duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving had another electrifying performance on Monday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves, combining for 69 points on 58-percent shooting from the floor. But ... as was the case in Sacramento on Saturday, the Mavs still came away with a close, frustrating loss.

After falling down by as many as 26 points, Dallas clawed its way back into the game late thanks to Irving's breathtaking 26-point fourth quarter. Irving finished with a game-high 36 points, along with five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Doncic finished with 33 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

Down by three with 14 seconds remaining, there was some indecision between Doncic and Irving on who should take the final shot. That resulted in no one getting a final shot, as Irving eventually turned the ball over after multiple back-and-forth passes between the two co-stars.

"Yeah, I think it's safe to say that one was trying to get the other and the other was trying to get the ball back to that one," said coach Jason Kidd. "It's going to happen. It was just like Sacramento – they had the opportunity. Give [the Timberwolves] credit, they got the deflection on the pass and that kind of threw the play off.

"But just understanding those guys were playing tonight in that fourth quarter, it was kind of like the first quarter in L.A. and Sacramento, Starting with Kai (Kyrie Irving)'s aggressiveness and being able to get us going. That helped put us in the position to tie the game."

On this episode of the Mavs Step Back Podcast, we talk about the Mavs' disappointing loss to the Timberwolves at length, and especially that final sequence that Doncic and Irving will surely learn from. We also look ahead to Dallas' final game before the All-Star break against the Denver Nuggets, as well as the Mavs working out LaMarcus Aldridge on Tuesday as well.
